Faction Athletics Carnival
Wow – what a hugely successful and fun day our entire campus community enjoyed, last Friday. A massive thank you to Ms Hamid, who organised and coordinated the event, for every student in our schools. Staff have trained the students all term, in preparation for the carnival, then worked in many roles on the day, while Mr Fletcher, our gardener worked tirelessly to keep our oval ready for the week. Other special thanks must go to Mr Cooke our starter and Mrs Underwood our DJ/MC, both of whom kept the day running smoothly. Our team officials tent recorded all the points! Our Faction Captains were simply amazing, helping teachers in the bays and encouraging and coaching younger students all day.
To our P & C Team, including the Canteen Crew, all so ably led by Mrs Hopkinson, kept us fed, hydrated and happy all day. Their fundraising efforts were well supported by the community and will in turn benefit our students.
To the students who never gave up all day – congratulations! While not everyone can win an individual medal, everyone’s efforts are to be applauded, as your ‘never give up attitude’, competitive spirit and sportsmanship was outstanding.
To the parents, carers and extended family members who came along and supported us all – thank you for finding the time in your day to make the day so much more special.
Finally, Congratulations to BADGINGARRA for taking the title of Champion Faction for 2021.

Book Week Dress Up
The 2021 Book parade was a very well attended this year after the low key affair we had last year due to Covid. And I must say what an amazing celebration of Books we all enjoyed yesterday. Our Book Week Dress Up was incredible due to the large variety of costumes shown off by the students and staff across the campus. To the students and their parents and carers who helped prepare costumes – thank you. School events such as these, bring us closer together as school community as we acknowledge and celebrate the single most important element of learning – Reading. Also a huge thanks to the staff who dressed as their favourite book character, your support is invaluable.

Our Breakfast Club is an important part of our school community, and has been for a number of years, providing students with some nourishing ‘fuel’ to start their day at school. A big thank you to Mrs Jones, our chaplain who has been integral in providing our students with brekky for many years. For the rest of the year Mr Donegan and a roster of volunteer teachers, will organise and prepare the breakfast for students each week.
Open Night Wednesday 15 September 5.30pm to 7.00pm
Next Wednesday night the campus will come alive as we hold the annual Open Night. With no Covid restrictions this year, we are fortunate to again open all classrooms to our school community, where students can share their learning experiences with their families and, parents and carers can see just how their children are progressing. Teachers will be in classrooms though out the night, but we ask that should you wish to have a specific discussion with your child’s class teacher, you make an appointment at another time to do so.
Classrooms will be open between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, we then ask that parents and carers move into the Covered Assembly Area at 6.30pm, where our Choir will perform. The canteen will be open for snacks all night and the Year 6s are holding a Sausage Sizzle to help raise funds for the Graduation, along with some raffles. So please bring some ‘cash’ along to support these fundraisers.
$100,000 – Funding for South Ballajura PS
I am delighted to announce that we have recently been notified of two very beneficial financial gains for the school by our local MLA, Rita Saffioti, Member for West Swan.
As part of an election commitment to schools, we have been given $60,000 to specifically target Air-Conditioning in classrooms and to design and develop a Yarning Circle. Both of these initiatives are in hand, with air conditioners to be installed, in some classrooms, before the hot weather arrives; while we have recently engaged a landscaper to work with Mrs Irene Farmer to bring to fruition, her vision, for our very own Yarning Circle.
More recently we were notified that we have been granted $40,000 as part of the Primary Science Program. We are fortunate enough to receive this funding to support our students in STEM education, funding modern equipment to inspire future doctors, geologists and chemists.
$70,000 – Funding for South Ballajura ESC
MLA Rita Saffioti, Member for West Swan has also provided $60,000 to fund playground equipment for our Bike track Area. It’s fabulous that our long term improvement program can now be implemented sooner than anticipated.
Equipment research and selection commenced in 2020 with the National Schools Online Survey. The list was revisited by students, staff and SBESC Board, including parent representatives, again during terms 1-3 this year. When the funding was confirmed a plan was drawn up which includes some nature playground features. We are eager to see this project commence as soon as possible.
As a small school, we were also allocated $10,000 for Science/STEM equipment as part of the Primary Science Program.
Year 2, TA12 Assembly
Thank you to Ms Davis’s Year 2s from TA12 and who provided us with an extremely uplifting song about Book Week – ‘The World Book Day Song’, to the tune of Shotgun by George Ezra. This very catchy adaption of the tune certainly encouraged us all to read more:
“Time flies by when you are reading a book, take a look and you’ll know what I mean;
Poems, Comics or Magazines, I’ll be reading my way; ‘Cos It’s world book day;
Inside of the cover, lets discover, what’s inside!”
R U OK? Day
The ups and downs of life can affect each of us differently. Sometimes it won’t be obvious that someone is struggling, but having the support of family, friends and close colleagues can help those close to us better navigate the challenges that come their way.
Don't wait until someone is visibly distressed or in crisis to ask them how they're really going. Make a moment meaningful and ask, "are you OK?" because your conversation could change a life.
If you want to support someone but aren’t sure where to start, follow these four steps:
- ASK R U OK? – Pick the right time and place and ask them how they're going.
- LISTEN – Listen with an open mind and without judgement.
- ENCOURAGE ACTION - Encourage them to do something that might lighten the load.
A reminder about the upcoming choir excursions to the Massed Choir Festival at Perth Concert Hall, both in Week 10.

This week we were entertained by TA12 who sang a catchy song about the fun of reading books, which coincided perfectly with our campus celebrating Book Week. They inspired us all with their Book week costumes and enthusiastic actions to the song. Our guitar and brass instrumental students were also given the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Their performance certainly showed how much they have learnt in their weekly lessons. Thanks to Miss Davis and our instrumental teachers for preparing their students for these items.

Congratulations to Logan, Paul, Harrison and Archie who were awarded the very prestigious bronze badge, after earning 300 faction tokens for demonstrating our Keys to Success.

Beldon Esc Sports Carnival Day
We had glorious sunshine for the Beldon ESC Sports Carnival on Tuesday. A big thankyou goes to Ms Sam, Miss Hof and Mr Hume who got to Beldon early to set up our tents and flag for the day. Also, a big thankyou to the staff who helped pack up at the end of the carnival. Numerous staff added a splash of colour with their green tutus and hats. Thanks to all the parents and carers who came along to support the Centre and cheer along everybody. Everyone showed off their ‘speedy’ footwork on the race track in the morning. After lunch, there was a terrific range of interactive tabloids organized which gave all the students a chance to show their skills while having a whole lot of fun. Congratulations to Ruby M and Tyler C for being presented with the South Ballajura ESC Sports Champions medals at the end of a great day.
Next on the Community Access agenda is the Aquatic Program. Starting in Week 9 with a water safety incursion presented by our own multi-qualified aquatic trainer, Mrs Green and flowing into Term 4. This program in Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4 is to familiarise the students with the aquatic environment at Bayswater Waves before participating in the Interm Swimming Lessons during Weeks 3 and 4.

Meet the Board

My name is Cheryl Lennox and, as you would know, I am Principal of SBESC. I have had over 40 fabulous years in education – each one a new adventure (even in the same school and especially in Covid-19 times!)
I started as a graduate teacher in Melbourne, then rural WA in Geraldton and Meekathara before moving to Perth. I have taught in mainstream primary schools, High School (ESU), an Ed Support School, as School of the Air (with the biggest classroom in the world and a joey mascot!)
My Ed Support journey began as swimming teacher at Holland Street School, hence, my bias for pool/ water safety & skills. I am an inaugural 1994 South Ballajura Campus teacher and became principal in 2000. I was involved in Ed Support Curriculum Development in Central Office and have been chair of 2 networks.
Our Centre enrolments have grown considerably. It is a pleasure to be working with dedicated staff and parents, which enabled us to become an Independent Public School in 2014 and qualify as a finalist in the WA Education Awards School of the Year in 2015 – testimony to our T.E.A.M philosophy.
I remain passionate about inclusive education where everyone belongs and has a voice.
I have been married for 40+ years. Our two daughters, who attended South Ballajura Primary, are both married and I have 2 active grandsons, who have just turned 3 and 5. As a grandparent, I have now experienced the ASD diagnosis/NDIS journey with the eldest one, giving me new insight.
I also thoroughly enjoy time with family & friends, learning new things, gardening, walking, renovating, reading, retail therapy and yes, Netflix! WA Wanders out yonder, are our current travel destinations in COVID times.
Chatterbox Time with Ms Capelli

Chatterbox tip of the week:
It is important to balance the amount of questions we ask with comments. You can make comments about what has happened, what is happening and what will happen.
For example, instead of asking “can you see the car?” and “what colour is it?” you can say “I see a blue car. The car is driving slowly.” This helps to create a language rich environment for children to learn new words and concepts.
CAMPers Silent Morning Tea
Pictures speak a thousand words they say, and at our CAMPers Silent Morning Tea, this was so true!

Much silent fun was had and many skills shown off. Well done to all the CAMPers students. A big thank you to everyone that attended and we hope to see you all at the next one.
Playskills
A wonderful group of students from TA9 and TA17 have attended Playskills this term.
What a blast we have had. Games, Lego, Snap and Dominoes along with the best game of “Cat and Mouse” we have ever seen!
Students have teamed up and some wonderful friendships have formed. Mrs. Q. is the “Snap” champion at this point, however, it is looking like this will change very soon!!
